Seiko automatic watch movement : history of innovation Seiko is a unique brand with a unique story. The watchmaker has always been a pioneer, especially when it comes to automatic movement watches. Seiko’s achievements have shaped the watch industry, a fact which often surprises, especially in consideration of the relatively low prices of their timepieces. Even the 50th Anniversary edition of their gem of a watch – the Seiko 5 watches - costs well under $500. Today, the company continue their tradition of making reliable, cleanly designed, affordable automatic watches. The continuity of tradition is partly because the company by the descendants of the original founders. According to the Director of the Seiko Watch Corporation, Hiroshi Nakahara, Seiko continue to produce with a sincere determination in order to create practical watches. Adding that the pride of the words Japanese manufacture’ drives the company’s standards. Seiko began manufacturing watches in 1892 with the primary aim of manufacturing wall clocks. They then added pocket watches to their product line three years later, and in 1913 they released their first wristwatch titled Laurel, which they manufactured at around 30 to 50 pieces a day. It wasn’t until the 1963 that they released their first watch of international notoriety - the Seiko 5 Sportsmatic - which introduced multiple innovations including a Diaflex mainspring, and a Diashock resistant design. The very first Seiko 5 Sport was developed in 1969. This was a year that which came to be known by watch aficionados as the “great automatic chronograph race.” The competition was stiff, including the production of watches such as the BreitlingChoron-Matic and the Heuer Monaco. However it was Seiko who was first to hit the market in May of the same year, beating their competition. Today the Seiko watches using both the Seiko 7S26 and Seiko 7S36 movement is most sort after by watch fanatic when it comes to mechanical watches duo to it robust design and precision.
