Seiko 5 Sports automatic watches

Seiko 5 Sports automatic watches

Seiko automatic makes affordable entry level automatic watches. As an example of a Seiko automatic, take a look at Seiko 5. The Seiko 5 series is an extremely successful line of automatic watches. Thanks to its affordable price and high build quality, these watches are coveted by watch collectors far and wide. But Seiko does not just make automatic watches; they also innovate in the field. They created a magic lever technology, which allows a mainspring, the energy storage medium of automatic watches, to be winded from both directions. Traditional automatic watches only captures kinetic energy from one direction. Amazingly, Seiko found a way to capture energy from both directions. The end result is that a Seiko automatic watch ends up around 2X more efficient compared to traditional automatic watches from other brands. Amazing, isn't it?

So what's the difference between a Seiko 5 automatic and Seiko 5 Sports? Underneath the case, both brands use the 4R36 series (or the 7S26 if its an old model) as their movement. This watch movement series is well known among watch collectors as reliable and accurate. So there's not much difference underneath. But if you just want to find superficial differences, the easiest way is to just look for the branding. A Seiko 5 automatic will have a "Seiko 5" underneath the 12'clock position while a Seiko 5 Sports will have a "Seiko 5 Sports". Appearance-wise, a Seiko 5 will have a traditional casual watch look. For example, take a look at SNK610K1. Meanwhile, a Seiko 5 Sports will have sports watch look: black dials with large watch hand. Take a look at the SRP570J1 or the SSA205J1 as an example. Also while both brands are water resistant, a normal Seiko 5 tend to only have a 30m water resistance while a 5 Sport will have at least 100m. But in the end, they all have the shared characteristics of a Seiko 5: automatic winding, integrated day/date display, water resistance, recessed crown, and a durable case and bracelet. At the end of the day both brands are Seiko automatic watches, so no matter what watch you buy they are guaranteed to be reliable. So if you're looking for a dependable rugged sport watch, then buy a Seiko 5 Sports watch. But if you want a normal watch that's durable, then check out Seiko 5.
